Abstract
Mandirs, or traditional temples, have long served as vital spaces for diverse religious experiences, encompassing scriptural revelations, communal and private worship, celebrations, festivals, and sensory or mystical engagements. These architectural structures have been central to shaping, preserving, and re-imagining religious life and practices throughout history. As these traditional mandir spaces persist, introducing new, evolving technologies presents both foundational challenges and opportunities for integration. This work introduces exemplars of contemporary integrations of technological innovations within traditional mandir spaces to address the presumptive irreconcilability of the “old” with the “new.”
Focusing on the Swaminarayan Akshardham in New Delhi, this work reflects on the mandir’s use of diverse technologies and its function in enhancing the religious experience of its publics. It examines how these innovations positively affect the transmission of a mandir’s core teachings, values, and religiosity. This work concentrates on exploring how integration opportunities occur at two crucial levels: (1) the planning and creation of mandir spaces and (2) mandir functionalities pertaining to religious experiences. Among them, implementing contemporary construction technologies, re-envisioning creation spaces, and using diverse materials at the mandir creation phase demonstrate how innovation can positively impact a mandir’s efficient creation and longevity. Examining how modern technology that catalyzes visual, haptic, and cross-modal experiences complements religious expression and learning shows how these technologies can also facilitate the creation of meaningful, immersive, and authentic religious experiences.
This investigation concludes that technology integration is essential to how mandirs are created, experienced, and operated. Although there are inherent challenges to integration, exemplars discussed in this work not only demonstrate that such integrations are possible but also present innovative ways to enhance traditional mandir functionalities while staying true to its values, purposes, and religiosity. As such, the highlighted integration points provide valuable insights into practical advancements for future mandir creations.
