ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः॥ “Auṃ, May we all be protected; May we all be nourished; May we work together with great energy; May our intellect be sharpened; Let there be no animosity amongst us.”
(Taittirīya Upaniṣad) We advocate that promoting healthy discussions has many benefits and is a necessary feature of modern academic development. A discussion is a process of communication in which ideas are exchanged.
It is an integral tool for both the learning process and the development and expression of rigorous academic research.
Encouraging respectful, honest, and insightful discussions enhance the quality of all aspects of education and study.
Ensuring Quality Academic Learning
As a consequence of such peer scrutiny, discussions play an important role in ensuring that both meaningful questions are asked and compelling resolutions are proposed. These exchanges allow for both learning and research to become more developed and robust. Incorporating discussions with the classroom and research endeavors plays a crucial role in assuring quality learning and investigation.
By nature of being a form of communication, discussions demand a level of clarity on all sides.
Discussions forcibly increase the clarity with which ideas, arguments, objections, interpretations, and evidence are formulated, presented, and conveyed.
Since discussions are not unidirectional, they also serve as sources of essential feedback in real time.
Collaborative Scholarship
Furthermore, joint scholarship provides opportunities for students and researchers to develop lasting relationships and reaffirm identities as co-creators of knowledge.
Effectively working together on a common research endeavor promotes
(1) the division of intellectual labor, (2) the learning of skills from collaborators, (3) the expedition of solutions and conclusions, (4) more critical and in-depth thought, (5) and motivation for achieving goals and deadlines.
Incorporating discussion with learning and research also facilitates collaborative scholarship.
Mutual communication of ideas in such collaborative projects also allows for all parties to foster new connections and become aware of new consequences, allowing for investigations to gain new perspectives and become relevant to wider audiences.
Empathetic Learning
For these reasons, we promote discourse as an essential tool for building a world in which people can live and work together across social, cultural, and religious divides.
Open, meaningful discussion creates and substantiates appreciation of continuing differences in opinions, perspectives, and methodologies.
By providing a platform for people from diverse disciplines, communities, educational backgrounds, and faith commitments to engage in mutually beneficial discourse, such collaboration also encourages attentive, appreciative, and respectful listening.
Empathetic discourse also helps students learn the process and habits of democratic discourse. Such exchanges are enriched by the pursuit of disciplinary, cultural, and religious fluency.
Broadening the Discussion Table Bridging dialogues between experts from different language backgrounds, among scholars and those in communities and applied fields, and among teachers and students is necessary to foster awareness, appreciation, and responsibility in all forms of learning and research.
To ensure constructive discussions it is necessary to broaden the discussion table.
Integrating interfaith, interdisciplinary, and multicultural dialogue promotes awareness, allows for the introduction of new perspectives, and creates opportunities for gaining inspiration from other traditions and diverse experiences.
While understanding the significance of both discussion and its diverse participation, we also recognize that it is important to establish dynamic systems and guidelines to ensure that involvement is mutually respectful and productive.
Committed to integrating well-intentioned discussion within our learning and research activities, we encourage discourses that lead to positive contributions.
For discussions to be meaningful it is necessary to avoid biased, unsympathetic, and malicious dialogue.
Return to About
Encouraging Discussion Comprising of large conference halls, smaller break-out rooms, and both traditional and digital classrooms, our institutes provide ample spaces for active dialogue and supplementary resources for the presentation of electronic media and digital communication. The immense benefits of discussions make them an indispensable tool for advancing learning and research. For this reason, throughout all our institutes we actively facilitate programs that promote participation in productive, responsible discussions.
The most notable are our efforts to integrate active dialogue within conferences and seminars; to promote collaborative research, publication, and expression; and to incorporate a peer-review process within our publication practice.
Our institutes also facilitate dialogue by hosting guest lectures by experts from a wide range of disciplinary fields, along with community and religious leaders.
In addition to such soft implementations, our institutes also facilitate dialogue by providing ample spaces for such interactions.
